Are there any other writing communities that interest you that aren't dead?

There are active places to post your writing, but not a ton of communities that offer the kinds of challeneges I mentioned.

Word lists would be super helpful. One of my favorite pieces (where my LJ name and the subsequent title of my book comes from), called "A Woman of Substance," came from a word list my dad gave me.
